Hello from Steve!
What is this new A SAFE PAST TENSE CD?
Does it contain studio demos made to prepare for recording the 2012 OVER WITH YOU "officially released" cd? Yes.
Is it New Liberty Half Volume 2? Yes.
Does it also include three live tracks from a March 1, 2014 concert near Mobile, Alabama performed with Sugarcane Jane, also known as Anthony and Savana Crawford? Yes.
Is one of those three songs an acoustic trio take on "Romeo's Tune"? Yes.
Is this version better than the one on STRANGE NAMES AND NEW SENSATIONS that I also recorded with Anthony? Yes.
Is Sugarcane Jane doing about half a dozen shows with me and traveling from Birmingham, Alabama to Hackensack, New Jersey by way of Chapel Hill, NC in July? Yes.
Does this record contain my favorite version of "Don't Look Down, Pollyanna"? Yes.
Does this version of "Metal Marie" have Adam Box playing two drum parts? Yes.
Does it sound like The Grateful Dead? Not really.
Does drummer Adam (from Meridian, MS) now tour with popular new country group The Brothers Osborne? Yes.
Does Mike Anderson, who manages steveforbert dot com, say "In Love With You" is the best track on A SAFE PAST TENSE? Yes.
Am I also currently completing an entirely new album for official release later this year? Yes.
Do I think you'll really like A SAFE PAST TENSE in the meantime? Yes, I definitely do. In fact, I think you'll like it for a long time.
These studio demos could easily have turned out to be the actual released record if I'd had all of his time to complete them!
Robby Turner remixed this album in Hermitage, TN near his own home and Andrew Jackson's.
I had a fabulous time working hours and hours on these tracks, mostly spent with Charlie hadwick---bass player, producer, studio owner, recording engineer AND inventor of the Chadwick Folding Bass!
Maura Kennedy came by Steve Allen's home studio to sing on "ALL I NEED TO DO"---you know, "J E S S I C A"!
Christopher Marion, my string arranging, wizard musician friend from Minnesota, created a quartet part for my solo demo of "Over With You."...and played all those parts himself on real honest-to-God instruments.
Special thanks to Kenneth McGee for all of his patience mastering this CD with me.
on the Jersey Shore also busy editing a memoir
(Any recording artist over 59 years of age with over 14 officially released studio CDs has to write a memoir now. It's the law.)
